Mondrian is known for his abstract compositions with straight lines and blocks in red, yellow and blue, combined with white, black and gray. Behind that apparent simplicity lies a careful search for rhythm and balance. From landscapes and recognizable forms he gradually developed a visual language in which color and proportion play the leading role.

Mondrian worked in the Netherlands, Paris, London and New York, among other places. In his late work, including Broadway Boogie Woogie, he incorporated the rhythm of the city and his love of music. His visual language has had a lasting influence on art, architecture, fashion and design.
